Stations in Hong Kong

Hong Kong West Kowloon

Hong Kong has exactly one high-speed rail station. West Kowloon opened in September 2018 on the northern edge of Kowloon, and every mainland train leaves from there — there is no second station to check and no split between domestic and international terminals.

Immigration works differently here. You clear mainland Chinese exit-entry procedures inside West Kowloon before boarding, not at the boundary itself. That is why the station asks you to arrive well ahead of departure: the process is part of the journey, not a formality on arrival.

Getting to the station

  • Airport Express from the airport to Kowloon takes about 21 minutes, and the station sits directly above it.
  • Austin station on the Tuen Ma line is a five-minute walk away.
  • Taxis and cars drop off at the B1 level; the departure hall is one floor above.

Questions about trains from Hong Kong

Do I need a visa to take the train from Hong Kong to mainland China?

For most nationalities, yes — the train crosses an international boundary, and you clear mainland immigration inside West Kowloon before departure. The visa or permit you would need at a land border is the same one you need here. Check the requirements for your own passport: we sell train tickets and cannot advise on visa eligibility.

Is West Kowloon the same as Kowloon station?

No. West Kowloon is the high-speed rail station. Kowloon station, on the Tung Chung line and Airport Express, is directly beneath it in the same complex — but it is a separate station with separate ticketing.

Can I buy a ticket at the station on the day?

You can, but popular departures sell out and the queues at West Kowloon get long at peak times. Most travellers book ahead for that reason.
