Guangzhou Baiyun Airport (CAN) to Guangzhou South railway station

No need to cross the city first: the Guangzhou East Ring intercity links the airport straight into the national rail network, and the stop beside Guangzhou South is called Panyu.

In short

The recommended route from Baiyun Airport to Guangzhou South is the Guangzhou East Ring intercity: Terminal 2 passengers board at Baiyun Airport North on B1 of the ground transportation centre, Terminal 3 passengers at Baiyun Airport East on B2 of the T3 transport centre, and both ride to Panyu station, which is about a 10-minute walk from Guangzhou South. Be aware that the two official figures disagree: Baiyun Airport publishes a fastest time of 28 minutes while Guangdong Intercity, the operator, later published 42 minutes. Both are shown here rather than picking one for them. Tickets come from 12306, the Guangzhou Metro app or a Yangchengtong card, or from the counter if you carry ID. The second option is the direct air-rail coach: eight departures in each direction spread across 11:30–23:15, boarding at Terminal 2 (the T1 stops listed in the original notice no longer exist) and, in the Guangzhou South direction, inside the P3 car park on Nanzhan South Road — walk to the southwest commercial complex exit and look for the South 10 pillar. Its fare has never been published. The third option is simply a metered taxi, whose cost moves with traffic; no official reference fare exists for it either.

How to take each option

Guangzhou East Ring intercity (recommended)

Time From 28 to 42 min (two official figures)Fare Check 12306 for the fare
  1. Follow the intercity signs to the airport’s own station: Baiyun Airport North on B1 of the Terminal 2 ground transportation centre, or Baiyun Airport East on B2 of the Terminal 3 transport centre.
  2. Buy your ticket: easiest is 12306 or the Guangzhou Metro app for Baiyun Airport North to Panyu, though a Yangchengtong card taps straight through the gates and the counter sells tickets too if you carry ID.
  3. Pass the gates and check the platform screen for Panyu before boarding.
  4. Alight at Panyu, follow the Guangzhou South signs out of the station and walk about 10 minutes to the high-speed terminal.
  5. Clear security and the ID check, then find your gate on the departure boards; printed tickets can also be collected from the machines inside the station.

Why two figures: Baiyun Airport publishes 28 minutes for Baiyun Airport East (T3) to Panyu, while Guangdong Intercity, the operator, later published a compressed fastest time of 42 minutes. They conflict, so plan on the slower one. The same intercity line links T2 and T3 in about 6 minutes for ¥5, and the operator publishes no first or last train times, so check 12306 before you rely on a departure.

Air-rail shuttle coach

Fare Fare not published
  1. Follow the coach signs to the Terminal 2 boarding point; the T1 stops listed in the original notice are gone with the terminal.
  2. Pick a departure from the timetable posted at the stop — eight runs in each direction, spread over 11:30–23:15.
  3. In the Guangzhou South direction you board inside the P3 car park off Nanzhan South Road: walk to the southwest commercial complex exit and look for the South 10 pillar.

The Guangdong transport department notice gives no fare and still lists the now-closed T1 stops, so this page follows the situation on the ground and recognises Terminal 2 only.

Taxi

Fare Metered
  1. Queue outside Gate 50 (domestic) or Gate 53 (international) on the Terminal 2 arrivals level, or outside Gates 72 and 75 at Terminal 3.
  2. Show the driver the Chinese name 广州南站, ideally together with a screenshot of your train booking.
  3. Ask for the airport expressway, check that the meter is running, then pay the metered amount with tolls added and take the receipt.

Guangzhou publishes no airport-to-district taxi prices, only the formula — ¥12 for the first 3 km, ¥2.60 per km thereafter, 30% more at night and a 50% return-empty surcharge beyond 25 km — so the total moves with the traffic.

Late-night and early-morning arrivals

Neither option runs overnight: the air-rail coach window is 11:30–23:15, and the operator publishes no first or last intercity departure, so 12306 is the only reliable check. Landing late with a train to catch at Guangzhou South, take a taxi — the ranks never close, though the distance rate is 30% higher from 23:00 to 05:00. Leave yourself a margin when booking the train: international arrivals usually need 45–60 minutes from touchdown to the ground transport hall.

Questions travellers ask

How do I get from Guangzhou Baiyun Airport to Guangzhou South railway station?

Take the Guangzhou East Ring intercity from Baiyun Airport North (T2) or Baiyun Airport East (T3) to Panyu, then walk about 10 minutes to Guangzhou South. It is the only route that does not make you cross the city first.

How long does it take to get from the airport to Guangzhou South?

The official figures conflict: Baiyun Airport says as little as 28 minutes, while Guangdong Intercity publishes 42. Plan from 42 minutes and then add security, ticket collection and the walk from Panyu.

How much does the intercity train cost?

Our verified sources give no fare for Baiyun Airport to Panyu, so no number is printed here — check the day’s price on 12306 or in the Guangzhou Metro app. The one fare we can quote is the short hop between terminals: about 6 minutes and ¥5 from T2 to T3.

Where is the intercity station inside the airport?

At Terminal 2 it is Baiyun Airport North on B1 of the ground transportation centre; at Terminal 3 it is Baiyun Airport East on B2 of the transport centre, about a 3-minute walk from Exits A and B. Follow the intercity signs in both cases.

Is there a direct bus from the airport to Guangzhou South?

Yes, an air-rail shuttle coach runs eight times in each direction between 11:30 and 23:15. Board at Terminal 2 for the airport end, and inside the P3 car park at the South 10 pillar for the Guangzhou South end. The fare is not published.

Can I get onto a high-speed train without going into the city first?

Yes — the intercity runs all the way to Panyu beside Guangzhou South without entering the centre, and you can buy the onward high-speed ticket on 12306 in advance. Just leave enough time for the change.

How much time should I allow before my onward train?

International arrivals need 45–60 minutes to reach ground transport, then 28–42 minutes on the intercity, 10 minutes walking from Panyu and 15–25 minutes for security and ticket collection, so allow at least two hours if you can.

Can I take the metro all the way to Guangzhou South?

Official material points to the intercity or the air-rail coach. Metro Line 3 north extension only takes you as far as Tiyu Xilu (40 minutes, ¥7), after which you change across the city network under your own steam — check our Guangzhou metro page for that onward leg.

I land late at night — can I still reach Guangzhou South?

The coach window closes at 23:15 and no intercity first or last time is published, so a taxi is the dependable overnight choice — 24 hours, with 30% added to the distance rate at night. If your flight lands really late, consider a hotel near the airport and taking the intercity first thing in the morning.

Do I need ID to buy an intercity ticket?

Yes — rail travel in China is real-name. Show your passport or ID at the counter, book on 12306 under exactly the same document number, and have it checked at the gates.
