The honest version

What the day is actually like

Ten hours for two carving sites eighty kilometres from the city. Baodingshan is the one with the reclining Buddha; Beishan is smaller, older and — with a guide — the more interesting of the two.

Good for

  • Sculpture and Buddhist art
  • Travellers who have already done the city

Skip it if

It is a long drive for people who are not already interested in stone carving.

Most people get this wrong

The two sites are 15 km apart and are usually sold as one combined ticket. Missing Beishan cuts the day in half.

Getting here by train

High-speed rail

The tour starts and ends in Chongqing. Most travellers arrive at Chongqing North Railway Station — the pick-up loop is a short taxi or metro ride from the exits, and the tour returns you in time for an evening train. If you are coming from another city, check the direct high-speed trains and their first and last departures.

In and out

Per route

What’s included

  • Hotel pick-up and drop-off in central Chongqing, 5–9 seat vehicle
  • Combined ticket: Baodingshan and Beishan
  • Dazu Rock Carvings Museum
  • 4.5 hours of licensed guiding, with a headset each
  • Driver-guide and one bottle of water each

Not included

  • Lunch and dinner
  • Shuttle inside Baodingshan (about ¥15)
  • The digital cinema (about ¥40)
  • Personal expenses and gratuities
Heads-up
  • Everything worth seeing at Dazu is a story, and without the story it is just rock. The 4.5 hours of guiding and the headsets are included — stay within range of the guide.
  • Baodingshan is a one-way walk of about 2.5 km with steps and slopes. Wear proper shoes, and bring a hat in summer.
  • The museum closes on Mondays except during public holidays; when it does, Baodingshan moves to the morning and the guiding time stays the same.
  • The combined ticket is valid for two days — keep it if you want to walk Beishan again on your own.
  • April to October is peak season and the queues in front of the Thousand-Hand Guanyin and the reclining Buddha get long; the guide reorders stops to stay ahead of the coaches.

Best for travellers with an interest in stone carving and Buddhist art. The walking is moderate; children under seven tire on the Beishan leg, so consider shortening it.
