The honest version
What the day is actually like
A small group, a villa tea stop and the quiet lanes rather than the ferry crowd. Two of the island’s ticketed sights are not included, deliberately — half the group skips them.
Good for
People who want the island’s mood, not its queue
Couples
Skip it if
Sunlight Rock and Shuzhuang Garden cost extra; if both are must-sees, take the classic route instead.
Most people get this wrong
There are no cars on Gulangyu. Everything after the ferry is on foot, and the island is hillier than it looks on the map.

Getting here by train
High-speed rail
The tour starts and ends in Xiamen. Most travellers arrive at Xiamen North Railway Station — the pick-up loop is a short taxi or metro ride from the exits, and the tour returns you in time for an evening train. If you are coming from another city, check the direct high-speed trains and their first and last departures.
Sunlight Rock ¥50, Shuzhuang Garden ¥30, Haoyue Garden ¥10
Five-site combi ticket ¥112 (optional, covers Sunlight Rock and Shuzhuang)

Heads-up
Ferry tickets are sold against ID in fixed slots. Send passport name and number after booking, and carry the passport on the day — mismatched names are refused boarding.
No vehicles are allowed on Gulangyu; you walk everything. About 8 km over the day, so wear something comfortable.
Sunlight Rock has 300-odd narrow steps and a 30–60 minute queue in high season. If that does not appeal, look up at Organs Tower from below instead.
Unofficial guides and hard-sell hawkers are common on the island. This guide is licensed and does not take you into shops; decline anything offered on the street.
Return tickets are not tied to a sailing, and Sanqiutian pier peaks between 17:00 and 19:00. Turn up 30 minutes early.
All walking, but the ground is flat — fine for school-age children. Strollers are awkward in the lanes; a carrier works better.

Quick answers
Prices, hours and what is included
How much does a day trip from Xiamen to Gulangyu cost?
$57 per person on the group tour, or from $256 per vehicle for a private car with driver and guide. The group price includes the driver, guide and admission; the private price is for the whole vehicle, whatever the party size.
How long is the day?
It runs 08:30 to 17:30 — about 9 hours from pick-up to drop-off, including the drive. If you are catching a train or flight the same evening, book it for after 19:00.
Where does it start?
Hotels on Xiamen island. Your driver and guide meet you there; the exact spot is confirmed the day before travel.
What is included in the price?
Return ferry ticket to Gulangyu, ID-linked; Afternoon tea at Huangjia Garden villa (¥68); Licensed Mandarin-speaking guide throughout.
What is not included?
Sunlight Rock ¥50, Shuzhuang Garden ¥30, Haoyue Garden ¥10; Five-site combi ticket ¥112 (optional, covers Sunlight Rock and Shuzhuang).
How far ahead should I book?
Two days. We do not accept same-day or next-day bookings because the car, guide and admission have to be arranged in advance. Cancellation is free up to 7 days before the tour; inside that it steps to 20% (6–3 days) and 60% (2–1 days), and nothing is refunded on the day itself.

Ferry over in the morning, back in the evening, and the island fills a whole day. Climb Sunlight Rock for the view back over the water, then Shuzhuang Garden — the way it borrows the sea is the clever part.
No cars, no scooters — just red-brick villas, piano music leaking out of doorways and frangipani. The calmest few hours you will spend in Xiamen.
鼓浪屿是厦门的一颗海上明珠,岛上无车马喧嚣,红砖洋楼与南洋骑楼错落相融,琴声悠扬,海风与花香交织。

The old foreign concession left behind a museum of architecture: consulates, chapels and merchant houses within one square kilometre, plus the largest pipe organ in Asia.
