Getting here by train
High-speed rail
The tour starts and ends in Shanghai. Most travellers arrive at Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station — the pick-up loop is a short taxi or metro ride from the exits, and the tour returns you in time for an evening train. If you are coming from another city, check the direct high-speed trains and their first and last departures.
Sculling boats in the towns (about ¥150 per boat, shareable)
Personal expenses and gratuities
Heads-up
This is a 15-hour day and you reach Shanghai close to 23:00. With small children or older parents, take a single-town version instead.
Xitang’s corridor keeps the rain off, so the plum-rain season is actually good there. Zhouzhuang’s night shots work best after 18:30.
“Four Seasons Zhouzhuang” is an open-air water stage. In rain it may be cancelled or moved; the ticket is refunded and the itinerary continues.
No vehicles inside either town. Figure on 3 km of walking in each, on stone flags — flat shoes.
Zhouzhuang tickets allow repeat entry within three days after ID registration, so keep the ticket if you want to return.
Two towns is a long day for children under six, and the return is late. A half-day single-town version suits families better.

Quick answers
Prices, hours and what is included
How much does a day trip from Shanghai to Xitang by day cost?
$114 per person on the group tour, or from $256 per vehicle for a private car with driver and guide. The group price includes the driver, guide and admission; the private price is for the whole vehicle, whatever the party size.
How long is the day?
It runs 07:30 to 22:30 — about 15 hours from pick-up to drop-off, including the drive. If you are catching a train or flight the same evening, book it for after 00:00.
Where does it start?
Central Shanghai meeting points. Your driver and guide meet you there; the exact spot is confirmed the day before travel.
Both meals; Sculling boats in the towns (about ¥150 per boat, shareable).
How far ahead should I book?
Two days. We do not accept same-day or next-day bookings because the car, guide and admission have to be arranged in advance. Cancellation is free up to 7 days before the tour; inside that it steps to 20% (6–3 days) and 60% (2–1 days), and nothing is refunded on the day itself.

A tightly packed day. We were pushed to pay extra for a boat ride on the grounds that the evening show could not be seen otherwise — then told that night the show had been cancelled for two days. If it was already cancelled, why sell the boat ticket? The guide himself was fine.
