How to take each option

Taking Lines 1 to 3

  1. After baggage claim, walk out of the arrivals level at Terminal 1 or Terminal 2 and look for the designated airport coach stop.
  2. Check the departure board to confirm the line: Line 1 for Nanjing station, Line 2 for Hexi calling at Nanjing South, Line 3 for the Confucius Temple and Jinling Hotel.
  3. Buy a ticket at the counter, naming the stop where you plan to get off; the fare is ¥25 or ¥30.
  4. Put your bags in the luggage hold, keep your ticket stub, and press the bell or tell the attendant before your stop.

Line 1 is the only one that never stops for the night: after 21:00 it departs as passengers arrive, with a maximum wait of about 60 minutes, carrying on until the last flight lands.

Taking Lines 4, 5 and the Jiangbei line

  1. Walk out of Exit 3 at the arrivals level, turn right, and the stop is about 50 m along.
  2. Check the sign for your destination: Line 4 for Niushoushan, Line 5 for the Zhongshan Mausoleum, the Jiangbei line across the river to Jiangbei New Area and Luhe.
  3. Buy from the attendant, priced by how far you ride, from ¥20 to ¥60.

These three are the least frequent: Line 5 leaves the airport for the last time at 13:35 and Line 4 finishes around 17:30. If you miss them, take Line 1 into the city and continue by metro or taxi.

If you land after the last bus

  1. First check whether Line 1 is still running, since it operates until the last flight of the day.
  2. Once Line 1 has finished, queue at the taxi rank outside the arrivals level; taxis run 24 hours.
  3. Between 23:00 and 05:00 the per-km taxi rate carries a 20% surcharge, so build that into your budget.

Between roughly 00:35 and 04:30 there is no coach service at all; in that window you either take a taxi or wait for the first metro at 06:00.

Late-night and early-morning arrivals

Three lines run late: Line 1 until the last flight of the day, Line 2 to about 00:35 from Terminal 2, and the Jiangbei line to about 23:40 from the airport. Between roughly 00:35 and 04:30 there are no coaches at all, so use a taxi, which runs 24 hours with a 20% surcharge from 23:00 to 05:00, or wait for the first metro at 06:00.
