Qingdao Jiaodong Airport (TAO) to downtown Qingdao

The airport is out in Jiaozhou, more than 45 km from May Fourth Square. Metro Line 8 is the only option immune to traffic, and the express gets downtown in about 40 minutes.

In short

Qingdao Jiaodong International Airport (TAO) opened in 2021 out in Jiaozhou, more than 45 km from the downtown district around May Fourth Square, so the transfer into the city is a real journey rather than a short hop. The saving grace is that the terminal was built around a Ground Transport Centre: one level below baggage claim you find Metro Line 8, and even a high-speed railway station on the same floor. For most visitors the answer is Metro Line 8. Its airport station sits on B1 of the GTC; towards the city the first train leaves at 05:50 and the last regular service at 22:05, with three extra late express departures at 22:25, 22:45 and 23:15 in peak season, and trains every 8-10 minutes at peak. The limited-stop express covers the run to May Fourth Square in about 40 minutes, while all-stations trains need about 38 minutes just to reach Qingdao North. The fare to Qingdao North is ¥7. On the road, five airport coach lines leave from the coach station on Level 1 of the GTC, the most useful being Line 701 to the Olympic Sailing Centre at ¥30 and about 80 minutes. Taxis queue at the rank outside Door 2 on Level 1 and run on the meter in two classes: ordinary cars start at ¥10 for the first 3 km, then ¥2.2 per km up to 10 km, ¥3.3 per km from 10 to 35 km and ¥4.4 per km beyond 35 km, the last two bands including a dead-head surcharge; VIP cars start at ¥12 for 3 km and then charge ¥2.7, ¥4.05 and ¥5.4 per km over the same bands, plus ¥0.4 per km between 22:00 and 05:00. Run the published tariff across roughly 45 km and the trip to May Fourth Square lands in the ¥150-190 bracket before tolls and waiting time; the airport itself publishes no official airport-to-downtown price. Both the airport and the Qingdao municipal government advise taking the metro first.

How to take each option

Metro Line 8 (recommended)

Time About 40 min to May Fourth SquareFare ¥7 to Qingdao NorthFirst 05:50Last 22:05
  1. After baggage claim on Level 1, stay inside and follow the metro signs down by escalator or lift to the Ground Transport Centre on B1.
  2. Inside the GTC, follow the Line 8 signs to the concourse — a walk of three to five minutes.
  3. Buy a token at the machines (¥7 to Qingdao North) or tap through the gate with a QR code or transport card; the machines take cash and QR payment.
  4. Check the platform screens for the train type: the limited-stop express is quicker, while all-stations trains take longer.
  5. Towards the city, ride to May Fourth Square in about 40 minutes; for a high-speed connection, get off at Qingdao North, where the national-rail station is a same-station interchange.

The southern section of Line 8 opened on 22 September 2026, so the line now runs through to May Fourth Square on one train. Towards the city the first departure is 05:50 and the last regular one 22:05, with three extra express departures at 22:25, 22:45 and 23:15 in peak season, every 8-10 minutes at peak. All-stations trains take about 38 minutes to reach Qingdao North.

Airport coach Line 701 (Olympic Sailing Centre)

Time About 80 minFare ¥30Last 22:00
  1. After baggage claim follow the coach signs to the coach station on Level 1 of the GTC; since 5 September 2024 all airport buses leave from here.
  2. Buy a ticket at the counter for your destination, making sure it is Line 701 towards the Olympic Sailing Centre.
  3. Pay ¥30 and board, stowing your bags in the luggage hold and keeping the ticket stub.
  4. The coach calls at East Bus Station North Gate, Dongcheng International, Lotus Supermarket, Hongshanpo, Fuzhou Road at Ningxia Road, Hongkong Middle Road at Xuzhou Road and Fuxin Building, finishing at the Olympic Sailing Centre.

This is the only daytime line with a published fare, ¥30. The daytime service towards the city finishes at about 22:00; coming back, the first departure from the city is 07:20, with pickups at Fuxin Building, Hongkong Middle Road at Xuzhou Road, the Regent Hotel and Golden Lion Plaza.

Airport night coach (after 23:00)

Time About 120 minFare ¥30First 23:00Last 02:00
  1. Once the metro has stopped, look for the night coach counter at the Level 1 coach station of the GTC.
  2. Buy a ¥30 one-way ticket towards Fuxin Building.
  3. It runs via Liaoyang East Road at Jinsong 7th Road, Buxi Market, Hongshanpo, Liaoyang West Road at Wuxing Road, Qingdao Fuwai Hospital and Nanjing Road at Rudong Road, ending at Fuxin Building.

Towards the city it starts at 23:00 and runs roughly every 20-45 minutes until 30 minutes after the last flight lands (the timetable lists departures up to 02:00, adjusted to flight schedules); towards the airport it leaves Fuxin Building between 03:30 and 06:30. The journey takes about 120 minutes, slower than the daytime lines, but it is the only public transport still moving in the small hours.

Taxi or ride-hailing

Time About 60 minFare Metered
  1. Follow the taxi signs to the rank outside Door 2 on Level 1 of the terminal and queue.
  2. Before joining a queue, check the lane: there are separate queues for VIP-class and ordinary taxis, priced differently, so pick the right one.
  3. Show the driver your destination written in Chinese along with the address, and say you want the meter.
  4. Pay the metered total and take the receipt, which carries the plate number; complaints go to 0532-12345.

The airport is more than 45 km from the main city, and beyond 35 km the rate climbs sharply because the dead-head surcharge is bundled in. Road traffic is also weather-sensitive, so trust the meter and never bargain a flat fare. Both the airport and the city government recommend the metro first.

Late-night and early-morning arrivals

The last regular Metro Line 8 service towards the city leaves at about 22:05, with three late express departures at 22:25, 22:45 and 23:15 in peak season, which are not guaranteed every day of the year. After that the airport night coach takes over: towards the city it runs from 23:00 roughly every 20-45 minutes until 30 minutes after the last flight lands, ¥30 and about 120 minutes, ending at Fuxin Building. Later than that only taxis and ride-hailing remain, running around the clock, with a night surcharge of ¥0.4 per km between 22:00 and 05:00 and a fare to May Fourth Square of roughly ¥150-190. The airport hotline is 0532-96567.

How much is a taxi from Qingdao Airport to the city centre?
