Thailand Railways (SRT): routes and sleepers
Which Bangkok station to use, how the berth classes differ, and how booking works.
SRT (State Railway of Thailand) runs the long-distance network out of Bangkok: north to Chiang Mai via Ayutthaya, Phitsanulok and Lampang, south to Hua Hin, Surat Thani and Hat Yai, and north-east to Nakhon Ratchasima, Khon Kaen, Nong Khai and Ubon Ratchathani.
| Class | What you get |
|---|---|
| 1st class private cabin | Private 2-berth A/C cabin — only on train #9 to Chiang Mai |
| 1st class sleeper, upper berth | A/C berth in a 2-berth compartment, curtain door |
| 1st class sleeper, lower berth | Same compartment, about 100 THB more than the upper berth |
| 2nd class A/C sleeper, upper | Open-plan A/C berths, made up by staff at night |
| 2nd class A/C sleeper, lower | About 100 THB more than the upper berth; widest choice |
| 2nd class A/C seat | Reclining seat — fine for daytime runs, no bed |
| 3rd class fan seat | Non-A/C wooden seat, no reservation on some services — cheapest |
Lower berths cost about 100 THB more than upper berths. Fares are set per train, so the quote you receive is for the exact departure you picked.
Thai trains are sold by berth, not just by class, so the same train has several prices:
Bangkok–Chiang Mai is the classic overnight run. Train #9 uses the new CNR sleeper stock introduced in 2025 and costs about 20% more than #13; the first-class private cabin exists only on #9.
We sell up to 60 days ahead. SRT quotes a longer window but the numbers disagree, so we stay conservative rather than oversell. Tickets are released at 08:30 Thai time and first-class cabins sell out within minutes on popular dates — book as soon as your dates are fixed.
Foreign cards are frequently declined on the SRT website, which is the main reason travellers book through us. Send your request, we confirm berth availability within 12 hours, you pay the link we email, and the ticket arrives as a PDF with a QR code.

Which Bangkok station do long-distance trains leave from?
Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal, reached by the MRT. Hua Lamphong stopped handling long-distance trains in 2023 and only serves a few commuter services now — older guidebooks and some taxi drivers still send visitors there.
What are the sleeper classes on Thai trains?
First class is a private cabin or an upper/lower berth in an A/C compartment; second class is an A/C sleeper (upper or lower berth) or an A/C seat; third class is a non-A/C fan seat. Lower berths cost about 100 THB more than upper ones.
Why is train #9 more expensive than #13?
Train #9 to Chiang Mai uses the new CNR sleeper stock introduced in 2025 and costs about 20% more than #13. It is also the only Bangkok–Chiang Mai service with the first-class private cabin.
How far ahead can I book, and will my card work?
We sell up to 60 days ahead. SRT releases tickets at 08:30 Thai time and first-class cabins sell out within minutes on popular dates. International cards are regularly declined on the SRT site, so we take payment for you and email the ticket.
