Stations in Guangzhou
Guangzhou South · Guangzhou East · Guangzhou station · Guangzhou North
Guangzhou has four stations and they are not interchangeable: Guangzhou South, out in Panyu, takes the high-speed lines to Hong Kong, Beijing and Shanghai; Guangzhou East in Tianhe handles some coastal services; Guangzhou station in Yuexiu is mostly conventional trains; Guangzhou North is in Huadu, far north. Guangzhou South is about 40 minutes by metro from the old city.
Tickets are tied to a passport and checked at the gate, so the name must match exactly.
Getting to the station
- Guangzhou South is on metro lines 2, 7 and 22; about 40 minutes to central Yuexiu.
- Guangzhou East is on lines 1 and 3, right in Tianhe.
- From Baiyun airport, line 3 runs to Jiahewanggang where you change for the city lines.

Questions about trains from Guangzhou
Why is Guangzhou South so far out?
It was built on open land in Panyu for the high-speed lines, not in the old centre. Allow 40 minutes on the metro — you cannot walk out of it into the city.
Which station goes to Hong Kong?
Guangzhou South, not Guangzhou East or Guangzhou station. High-speed trains to West Kowloon leave from the south station.
Can I buy on the day?
You can, but the Hong Kong and Beijing services fill up. Book those ahead.
