The honest version

What the day is actually like

Two heavyweight sites in one coach day: Shaolin in the morning with the martial arts show, the Longmen grottoes in the afternoon. Twelve hours, and both are UNESCO.

Good for

  • Travellers with one day between Zhengzhou and Luoyang
  • Kung fu and Buddhist art

Skip it if

If you want either site done slowly, this splits the day in half — pick one instead.

Most people get this wrong

Shaolin and Longmen are 60 km apart in different cities. The coach is what makes one day work; doing it by public transport does not.

In and out

Per route

What’s included

  • Air-conditioned coach, one seat each
  • Shaolin Scenic Area admission, including the courtyard, Pagoda Forest and martial arts show
  • Longmen Grottoes admission
  • Licensed guide and wireless headsets
  • Travel agency liability insurance

Not included

  • Lunch and dinner
  • Shaolin cable car (¥100 return) and park shuttle
  • Longmen park shuttle (¥20 return)
  • Personal expenses and gratuities
Heads-up
  • The martial arts show runs to fixed times, roughly 9:30, 10:30, 11:30, 14:00, 15:00 and 16:00, thirty minutes each. The guide reorders the visit around it — do not wander off to catch one alone.
  • Incense inside the temple is free. Ignore anything offered as “blessed” by roadside vendors, and note that photography is banned in several halls.
  • Sanhuangzhai, the cliff walk on Shaoshi Mountain, is covered by the same ticket, but the cable car stops at 16:00 and this itinerary has no time for it — that needs a separate day.
  • Fengxian Temple is the finest stretch at Longmen and also the most crowded. The best angle is from the far bank on East Hill, looking back.
  • The expressway to Dengfeng jams on public holidays; departures move earlier and hotel pick-up is dropped on those days.

For travellers with a single day who want both a Zen monastery and an imperial cave temple. About 5 km of walking with steps; children and older parents simply go slower.

A treasury of Chinese stone carving: hundreds of caves and niches, every Buddha with a thousand years of belief behind it. The Vairocana Buddha is the one that stops conversation.

龙门石窟是中国古代石刻艺术的宝库,每一尊佛像都承载着千年的信仰与智慧,精湛的雕刻技艺令人叹为观止。

You can read the dynasties off the walls — Northern Wei figures are slender, Tang ones round and full. Imperial commissions and ordinary people's votive niches side by side in the same cliff.

不同时期的风格塑像很容易分辨,也是皇家石窟和百姓石窟混杂在一起的石窟精品。

The giant Vairocana Buddha is said to be modelled on Empress Wu Zetian, and it is the high point. Enter from the north-west service gate — it puts you on the right bank for the classic view across the water.

卢舍那大佛传说以武则天为原型雕刻,是龙门石窟的代表作,也是中国佛像雕刻艺术的最高峰。从西北服务区进入景区最为理想。
