Pick-up Wulingyuan East Gate
01
The honest version
What the day is actually like
A 10.5-hour walk through the park: up by the Bailong lift, across Yuanjiajie, over Tianzi Mountain and down by cable car. The sandstone pillars are real; so are the queues for the lifts.
Good for
Fit walkers
Anyone coming for the Avatar landscape
Skip it if
Knees and strollers: this is 8–10 km of steps with two cable cars in the middle.
Most people get this wrong
The park ticket is valid four days. Most people buy it for one and only find out at the gate that they could have spread the visit out.

Getting here by train
High-speed rail
The tour starts and ends in Zhangjiajie. Most travellers arrive at Zhangjiajie West Railway Station — the pick-up loop is a short taxi or metro ride from the exits, and the tour returns you in time for an evening train. If you are coming from another city, check the direct high-speed trains and their first and last departures.
Zhangjiajie National Forest Park ticket (¥258 high season, includes shuttles, valid 4 days)
Bailong Lift, one way (¥65)
Tianzi Mountain cable car, one way (¥72)
Mandarin-speaking guide and headsets
Not included
Lunch
Ten-Mile Gallery train ¥38 (walking is an option)
Yangjiajie and Huangshizhai cable cars
Personal expenses and gratuities
Heads-up
The park ticket is valid four days with repeat entry, so a second morning costs nothing.
In high season (April–October) queues at the lift and the cable car each run up to an hour. Entering at 07:30 is the only real defence.
The plateau runs 6–8 °C cooler and is often in cloud. Rain brings sea-of-cloud panoramas or nothing at all; the order of stops follows visibility.
About 8 km on foot, mostly steps and boardwalks. Bring a trekking pole if your knees complain.
Macaques in the park are bold. Do not carry food or plastic bags in the open, and treat any bite as a medical matter.
The lift and cable car remove most of the climbing, so school-age children cope. Strollers are impractical up top — a carrier is better.

A small-group day in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park that ran like clockwork: hotel pick-up in the city, a sensible route, and the highlights covered in a single day — Yuanjiajie, Tianzi Mountain and the Ten-Mile Gallery. Our guide knew every corner of the park, kept the pace comfortable and reminded us about safety on the trails. Ideal if you have one day and would rather someone else handled the logistics.
We hit rain and fog, so the long views were gone — a small pity. The guide made up for it: professional, knew every trail in the park, explained things vividly, warned us about the wet steps and took the time to find good spots for photos. The pace was relaxed, and the day still felt well organised.
