The honest version
What the day is actually like
Up the west cable car, down the north one, with the plank walk in between if you want it. Twelve and a half hours door to door, and the last two hours are your legs deciding whether they still work.
Good for
Reasonably fit hikers
People who want the ridge without a two-day trek
Skip it if
Knee trouble or a fear of heights — the descent is stairs for an hour, and the plank walk is genuinely exposed.
Most people get this wrong
Huashan is not one peak. Choosing west-up / north-down saves you the worst of the climbing; the reverse is much harder.

Getting here by train
High-speed rail
The tour starts and ends in Xi’an. Most travellers arrive at
Xi'an North Railway Station — the pick-up loop is a short taxi or metro ride from the exits, and the tour
returns you in time for an evening train. If you are coming from another city, check the direct
high-speed trains and their first and last departures.
Lunch — food on the mountain is expensive and limited; bring your own
Plank Walk harness ¥30 and Sparrow Hawk Turn ¥30
Queue-jump passes and cold-weather gear rental
Personal expenses and gratuities
Heads-up
Both the ticket and the cable cars are reserved against ID, and the West Peak cable car sells out days ahead in high season (March–November). Lock your date early.
This route is mostly downhill, but the steps are brutally steep. Knee supports and grippy shoes help more than a trekking pole.
The summit runs 8–10 °C colder than the valley and the wind is constant. Even in May and October you want a fleece.
On-mountain prices are three to four times the valley — a bottle of water is ¥10–15. Carry 1.5 litres and a packed lunch.
The last cable car down leaves at 20:00. In peak season the West Peak queue can exceed two hours after 16:00, and the guide will reorder the peaks accordingly. Follow the plan or you may miss the last car.
Cable cars make this manageable for average fitness, but the Plank Walk and Sparrow Hawk Turn are unsuitable for children or anyone uneasy with heights. With small children, stay on the West and South peaks.

Choosing to go up the west peak and down the north is the right call: the West Peak cable car gives you the whole massif from above, and the North Peak descent is gentle. You cover the main summits in a day without a long knee-battering walk down.
Huashan is the steep one of China's five sacred mountains — granite cliffs that go straight up and a ridge line that seems to hang in the air. If you want the most dramatic mountain day in China, this is it.
Both fierce and beautiful. The summit is a real climb and the plank walks demand care, but the paths, railings and cable cars are well maintained — a solid outdoor day rather than a stroll.
