The honest version
What the day is actually like
The 07:30 start is not padding. Pit 1 is shoulder-to-shoulder from about ten, and the two hours you gain are the difference between seeing the army and seeing other people’s phones.
Good for
First visit to Xi’an
Families — the pits need no explanation
Skip it if
Anyone who has already been: this route repeats the standard circuit, and the Tang show at Huaqing is a separate ticket.
Most people get this wrong
Tickets are tied to the passport used at booking and checked at the gate. A nickname or a shortened name gets you turned away.

Getting here by train
High-speed rail
The tour starts and ends in Xi’an. Most travellers arrive at
Xi'an North Railway Station — the pick-up loop is a short taxi or metro ride from the exits, and the tour
returns you in time for an evening train. If you are coming from another city, check the direct
high-speed trains and their first and last departures.
Lunch (group set meal about ¥30, or eat on your own)
Shuttle inside the museum (¥5)
“The Song of Everlasting Sorrow” evening show at Huaqing (from ¥288)
Personal expenses and gratuities
Heads-up
Tickets are tied to ID. Bring the passport or ID used at booking — the name must match exactly, and it is checked at the gate.
The museum never closes, but Pit 1 is shoulder-to-shoulder after 10:00 in summer and on public holidays. The early departure is the only reliable way around it.
“The Song of Everlasting Sorrow” is an outdoor night show at Huaqing, running March to October. It does not clash with the day tour, but you arrange your own return.
Guides may not use loudspeakers inside the pits; the group uses wireless headsets (¥20 on some departures). Lose the guide and you lose the commentary.
Lintong hits 40 °C in summer and the exhibition halls are not air-conditioned; the pits are cold and damp in winter. Dress in layers.
Built for first-time visitors who want both UNESCO sites in one day. Walking is modest, so it works with children and older parents.

Quick answers
Prices, hours and what is included
How much does a day trip from Xi’an to Terracotta Army cost?
$94 per person on the group tour, or from $256 per vehicle for a private car with driver and guide. The group price includes the driver, guide and admission; the private price is for the whole vehicle, whatever the party size.
How long is the day?
It runs 07:30 to 18:00 — about 10.5 hours from pick-up to drop-off, including the drive. If you are catching a train or flight the same evening, book it for after 19:30.
Where does it start?
Hotels inside the Second Ring Road. Your driver and guide meet you there; the exact spot is confirmed the day before travel.
What is included in the price?
Terracotta Army admission (¥120 in high season); Huaqing Palace admission (¥120); Air-conditioned coach for the full day.
What is not included?
Lunch (group set meal about ¥30, or eat on your own); Shuttle inside the museum (¥5).
How far ahead should I book?
Two days. We do not accept same-day or next-day bookings because the car, guide and admission have to be arranged in advance. Cancellation is free up to 7 days before the tour; inside that it steps to 20% (6–3 days) and 60% (2–1 days), and nothing is refunded on the day itself.

We joined a local group tour to the Terracotta Army and Huaqing Palace. The good part was the guide: warm, never pushy about shopping, and genuinely funny. The less good part: he did recommend the two evening shows, and the bottle of local soda promised on the page turned out to be a small bag of snacks. Still a solid day out.
