How to take each option

Taking a taxi at Terminal 1

  1. Exit through Gate 4 or 8 and walk south to the rank outside Gate 12.
  2. Queue only at the official rank and insist on the meter.
  3. Show the driver your destination and hotel name written in Chinese.

Taking a taxi at Terminal 2

  1. Queue outside Gate 25 on the arrivals level.
  2. Pay by the meter and ask for a receipt.

Using a ride-hailing app

  1. Open the app and set the pickup point to car park P1 or P2.
  2. Follow the signs to P1/P2 to meet your driver.

Ride-hailing cars do not pick up at the arrivals kerb — you must go to car parks P1/P2.

Late-night and early-morning arrivals

Taxis run 24 hours. Between 23:00 and 05:00 the flag-fall and distance charge are 30% higher. To save money late at night, the late-night airport bus costs ¥18–34.

Questions travellers ask

How much is a taxi from PVG to the city centre?

To the People’s Square area it takes 45–60 minutes and costs about ¥170–220 including expressway tolls, more at night.

Is there a night surcharge?

Yes — 30% is added to the flag-fall and distance charge from 23:00 to 05:00.

Where is the taxi rank?

At T1, outside Arrivals Gate 12 (from Gates 4 or 8 walk south); at T2, outside Gate 25.

Where do ride-hailing cars pick up?

In car parks P1 or P2 — not at the arrivals kerb.

How do I avoid being overcharged?

Queue only at the official rank, insist on the meter, ask for a receipt, and ignore touts in the arrivals hall.

Taxi or Maglev?

The Maglev is 8 minutes and ¥50 to Longyang Road, but you still need the metro; a taxi costs more but takes you door to door. With heavy luggage or a late arrival, take the taxi.

Who pays the expressway toll?

Tolls are paid by the passenger on top of the metered fare.

How many people fit in one taxi?

A standard taxi seats four including the driver, with room for a few suitcases; for five or more, or with a lot of luggage, book a larger car.

Taxi or a ride-hailing app?

Ride-hailing picks up at the fixed P1/P2 car park points and shows the price in the app; taxis queue at the arrivals rank with no waiting for a car to be assigned.

Do I need to tip?

No — just pay the metered fare.
