Taxis at Shenzhen Bao’an Airport (SZX): tariff, pickup points and ride-hailing

The city publishes the tariff but no airport-to-district price list, so this page spells out the formula and lets you do the arithmetic.

In short

Shenzhen publishes a taxi tariff rather than any official airport-to-city reference price, so there is no government-quoted figure for what your ride should cost. The formula is ¥10 for the first 2 km (¥13 between 23:00 and 06:00), then ¥2.70 per km beyond that (¥3.51 at night). A return-empty surcharge lifts the distance rate by 30% for the 20–35 km portion and by 60% beyond 35 km; waiting time is ¥0.8 per minute whenever the cab drops below 10 km/h or sits still. Between 23:00 and 06:00 a night surcharge adds 30% to both the flag-fall and the distance rate, and separately, from 23:30 to 06:00, every trip leaving the airport taxi queue carries a ¥15 special-zone charge. Over Spring Festival — New Year’s Eve 00:00 to the sixth day 23:59 — a further ¥10 applies per trip, booking fees go up to ¥6, oversized bags (over 0.2 m3 or 20 kg) are ¥0.5 each, and road, bridge, tunnel and ferry tolls are paid by the passenger. Taxis board from the platform outside Gate 13 of the Ground Transportation Center, where 16 queuing channels each have a row of seats, around the clock. Ride-hailing is somewhere else entirely: Zone A outside Gate 15 on Level 1, Zone B in the indoor waiting area on Level 1 of the GTC. Pay what the meter shows and nothing more; do not get into a cab whose driver will not use it.

How to take each option

How to get a taxi

Fare Metered
  1. After baggage claim, follow signs for taxis or the Ground Transportation Center and walk into the GTC.
  2. Find Gate 13; the boarding platform outside it is the official rank, where 16 channels release cabs in turn and every channel has seats.
  3. Name your destination before you get in; most drivers speak no English, so show the Chinese name and address of your hotel.
  4. Check that the driver starts the meter from zero, then pay the metered amount plus tolls at the end.

Queue only at the official platform outside Gate 13. Anyone who approaches you in the arrivals hall is an unlicensed driver who will quote low and then invent luggage or toll charges on the way; for disputes call 12328, staffed around the clock.

Using a ride-hailing app

  1. Before you order, check the pickup point in the app: ride-hailing at this airport uses two separate zones, A and B.
  2. Zone A is outside Gate 15 on Level 1 of the GTC, with lanes colour-coded blue, green and orange to match what the app shows you.
  3. Zone B is the indoor waiting area on Level 1 of the GTC, which is the better place to wait late at night or in the rain.
  4. Match the plate and the driver details in the app before you open the door.

Apps quote the price up front, which is reassuring late at night or on a long run, but when several flights land at once the queue can drag — in that case just walk to Gate 13 and take a taxi.

How the fare adds up

  1. The ¥10 flag-fall covers the first 2 km, rising to ¥13 for trips that begin between 23:00 and 06:00.
  2. Distance beyond that is ¥2.70 per km, or ¥3.51 per km at night, when a 30% surcharge is applied to both the flag-fall and the distance rate.
  3. Longer rides also attract the return-empty uplift: +30% of the distance rate for the 20–35 km portion and +60% beyond 35 km.
  4. When the crawl drops below 10 km/h or you sit in traffic, waiting time is charged at ¥0.8 per minute, and road, bridge and tunnel tolls are paid on top by you.
  5. Finally there is the airport-specific charge: ¥15 per trip leaving between 23:30 and 06:00, which is a lawful fee rather than a driver’s invention.

A worked example of the arithmetic only — not a quote, and excluding waiting time: suppose the cab to Futian meters 40 km in daytime off-peak traffic. The flag-fall is ¥10 and 38 km at ¥2.70 is ¥102.60; the return-empty uplift then adds ¥12.15 on the 20–35 km portion and ¥8.10 beyond 35 km, giving roughly ¥133 before tolls. The real distance, waiting time and route all move that figure.

Avoiding unlicensed drivers

  1. Ignore everyone who asks "taxi?" in the arrivals hall and head straight for the official rank outside GTC Gate 13.
  2. Check that the car has a roof light, a meter and the driver’s licence card displayed ahead of the front passenger seat.
  3. Refuse any flat "no meter" offer and insist on the meter being used and honoured.
  4. If you do end up in a dispute, note the plate and call 12328, which is staffed 24/7; passengers who pay through WeChat Pay can identify the car afterwards using the Taxi Assistant mini-program.

Late-night and early-morning arrivals

Taxis run 24 hours, but between 23:00 and 06:00 both the flag-fall and the distance rate carry a 30% surcharge, and from 23:30 to 06:00 trips starting at the airport queue add a further ¥15 special-zone charge — stacked together, that makes a late-night ride noticeably dearer than the same journey by day. For red-eye arrivals the last Line 11 trains leave around 00:02 (Hongling South) and 00:03 (Bitou), with half-route trains at 00:22 to Songgang and 00:57 to Airport North; once the metro has stopped you can buy a midnight Airport Express ticket at the counter beside GTC Gate 17 (¥20–40, last bus flexed to the final flight) or simply take a taxi from outside Gate 13.

Questions travellers ask

How much is a taxi from Shenzhen Airport to the city centre?

There is no official figure. Shenzhen publishes only the tariff — ¥10 for the first 2 km, ¥2.70 per km after, plus the return-empty uplift, waiting time and tolls. Any range quoted by third-party travel sites is a reference band, not an official price.

What is the flag-fall for a Shenzhen taxi?

¥10 covers the first 2 km, rising to ¥13 for trips that start between 23:00 and 06:00.

Is there a night surcharge?

Yes. From 23:00 to 06:00 a 30% surcharge applies to both the flag-fall and the distance rate, taking the per-km rate to ¥3.51, and from 23:30 to 06:00 every trip leaving the airport queue also carries the ¥15 special-zone charge.

Is the ¥15 airport surcharge a scam?

No. It is the lawful special-zone charge in the fare table published by the Shenzhen development and reform commission: ¥15 per trip leaving the airport taxi queue between 23:30 and 06:00. It simply is not mentioned on the airport’s own English taxi page, which is why so few travellers expect it.

Who pays the tolls?

You do, on top of the metered amount, paying whatever was actually incurred on the route.

Where do I find a taxi at Shenzhen Airport?

The taxi boarding platform outside Gate 13 of the GTC, with 16 queuing channels that each have a row of seats, open 24 hours.

Where does ride-hailing pick up?

Not with the taxis: Zone A is outside Gate 15 on Level 1 of the GTC, with blue, green and orange lanes, and Zone B is the indoor waiting area on Level 1. Both run 24 hours.

Can I pay by card or by phone?

The official documents state only that you pay the metered amount and do not publish a list of accepted payment methods. WeChat Pay users can look up the car afterwards through the Taxi Assistant mini-program, so WeChat Pay clearly works; carry some cash as well, just in case.

Is there a taxi at 3 a.m.?

Yes. Taxis run around the clock and night coaches still depart from the counter beside GTC Gate 17 for ¥20–40, whereas the metro has by then closed.

Do I need to tip the driver?

No. Just pay the metered amount plus tolls; there is no need to round up or add anything.

Taxi or metro into Shenzhen?

Line 11 makes Futian in 30 minutes for ¥7–8 with a predictable time and a low price. A taxi is door to door but multiplies that cost several times over and depends on traffic. Only after the metro closes, when you are several people together, or when the luggage is heavy, does a taxi clearly earn its money.

Can I take a taxi straight to Hong Kong or Dongguan?

A Shenzhen taxi cannot cross the boundary into Hong Kong and no cross-border taxi answer appears in the official material: take the A10 coach to Futian Port (¥25, 07:00–21:00) or a boat from the airport ferry terminal instead. For Dongguan and other Pearl River Delta cities, use the Suishen intercity or a high-speed train.
