Airport → railway station

Wuhan Tianhe Airport (WUH) to Wuhan railway station

There is no direct train between Tianhe Airport and Wuhan station, so this leg is always a surface transfer: the free air-rail shuttle, bus Line 2 at ¥45, or the metro for ¥8.

In short

Start with the fact that matters most: the airport has its own railway station, Tianhe Airport, but it sends no trains through to Wuhan Railway Station. It sits on the Wuhan–Xiaogan intercity line heading towards Xiaogan, so there is no through service to the main Jingguang high-speed station, and no way to simply scan your ID and board; this leg is a surface transfer, full stop. The best value is the free air-rail shuttle, which costs nothing to eligible passengers holding a flight ticket plus a G- or D-series high-speed ticket within the same 48 hours. Board at the third airport bus bay outside door 12 of Level 1 at T3 and ride through to the bus stop on Wuhan Railway Station East Square. Ten departures leave the airport at 09:25, 10:25, 11:25, 12:25, 13:25, 14:25, 15:25, 16:25, 17:25 and 17:55, running every 30 minutes at peak and roughly hourly off-peak, with a journey time of about an hour. You must register in person first, showing both legs of your itinerary and your ID, at the airport bus service desk inside door 12 of T3 or door 9 of T2, open 08:30 to 18:30 during the trial phase. After the last direct run at 17:55, eligible passengers switch to airport bus Line 2 free of charge from 18:15 onwards, and that keeps going until the last flight of the day. The second option is airport bus Line 2 at ¥45, running 08:30 until the last flight roughly every 30 minutes and taking about an hour, with tickets sold at doors 9–10 of Level 1 at T2 or inside door 12 at T3. Third is the metro: Line 2 towards Fozuling for 20 stops to Hongshan Square, change inside the station to Line 4 towards Wuhan Railway Station for 11 more stops, 31 stops and about 96 minutes for ¥8, which is the cheapest possible ride but costs the most time, and 23:00 is the hard last-departure boundary for the city-bound direction. Fourth is a taxi or ride-hailing car over roughly 42 km in 45 to 70 minutes, with third-party sites quoting ¥110–140 as a reference range rather than an official price and the expressway toll charged on top. Finally, if your train actually leaves from Wuchang or Hankou rather than Wuhan station, those two legs do have direct intercity trains — about 35 minutes to Wuchang for around ¥15 and 12 minutes to Hankou for about ¥7–8 — and that is the case in which booking a ticket makes sense.

How to take each option

The free air-rail shuttle: direct and at no cost

Time About one hourFare ¥0 with a flight plus a G/D train ticket within 48 hoursFirst 09:25Last 17:55
  1. Check that you qualify first: you need a flight ticket and a G- or D-series high-speed ticket within the same 48-hour window.
  2. Register in person at the airport bus service desk inside door 12 of Level 1 at T3, or door 9 of Level 1 at T2, showing both legs of the itinerary and your ID. The desk keeps 08:30 to 18:30 during the trial.
  3. Board at the third airport bus bay outside door 12 of Level 1 at T3, a bay reserved for this service, and do not join the queue for Line 1 or Line 2.
  4. Plan around that day’s departures: 09:25, 10:25, 11:25, 12:25, 13:25, 14:25, 15:25, 16:25, 17:25 and 17:55 from the airport, every 30 minutes at peak and hourly off-peak, with about an hour on board.
  5. You are dropped at the bus stop on Wuhan Railway Station East Square, a short walk from the entrance on that side; the transfer hotline 027-96577 extension 3 confirms the rules and the day’s arrangements.

Missing the 17:55 run is not fatal: eligible passengers may ride airport bus Line 2 free from 18:15 onwards, right up to the last flight. The operator describes this service as a trial, so the rules and times may shift, and it is worth reconfirming before you fly.

Airport bus Line 2: ¥45 direct to Wuhan station

Time About one hourFare ¥45 to Wuhan Railway StationFirst 08:30
  1. Buy your ticket and board at doors 9–10 of Level 1 at T2 or inside door 12 at T3, or through the official WeChat mini-program; the coach hotline is 13387631827.
  2. Say you are going to Wuhan Railway Station, which costs ¥45, and note the graduated stops on the way: Yangchahu and Jinqiao at ¥10, Huangpu Road at ¥12, Xudong and Yuejiazui at ¥15, Dongting at ¥18, and Chuhe Han Street and Hongshan Square at ¥20.
  3. It runs 08:30 until the last flight of the day roughly every 30 minutes, so it covers late evenings and the small hours too. Stow big bags in the hold and keep valuables with you.

¥45 is the top of the graduated scale, but what it buys is a single direct ride to the door of Wuhan station, which is hard to beat with heavy bags, a very late landing, or eligibility rules you cannot meet.

Metro Line 2 to Line 4: ¥8 but nearly 100 minutes

Time About 96 min, 31 stopsFare ¥8First 06:00Last 23:00
  1. Go down to Tianhe Airport metro station on the basement level of the T3 transport centre — from T2 take the free Konggang Route 3 shuttle first — then buy a token or tap a QR code at the gate.
  2. Take Line 2 towards Fozuling for 20 stops to Hongshan Square, where instead of leaving you follow the interchange signs to Line 4 towards Wuhan Railway Station.
  3. Ride Line 4 another 11 stops to Wuhan Railway Station and follow the signs into the departures hall: 31 stops, about 96 minutes and ¥8 in total.
  4. Mind the clock: the last city-bound Line 2 train leaves Tianhe Airport at 23:00, with the first train at 06:30 on public holidays, so later arrivals must use the coach or a taxi instead.

It is the cheapest possible ride at ¥8 and the only one immune to traffic, at the cost of nearly 100 minutes and one interchange, which is punishing with big suitcases.

Taxi or ride-hailing

Time 45–70 min (third-party)Fare Metered; ¥110–140 third-party range
  1. Board only at the official ranks outside door 7 of Level 1 at T2 and door 12 of Level 1 at T3, and show the driver the Chinese characters for Wuhan Railway Station.
  2. Ask for the meter: ¥10 for the first 3 km below 2.0 litres or 2 km above it, then ¥1.8 or ¥2.0 per km, with a 50% empty-return surcharge beyond 10 km.
  3. The route is roughly 42 km along the airport expressway and you pay the toll on top of the meter; third-party travel sites quote ¥110–140 and 45–70 minutes, which is a reference range rather than an official price.

Ride-hailing boards elsewhere: outside door 9 of Level 1 at T2 in the P1 car park, and on Level 1 of the transport centre at T3, seven or eight minutes on foot from doors 6, 7 or 8 of the Level 2 arrivals hall. Drivers hold in the remote P4 yard and take five to ten more minutes to reach you.

If your train actually leaves from Wuchang or Hankou

Time About 35 min to Wuchang, 12 min to HankouFare About ¥15 to Wuchang, ¥7–8 to Hankou
  1. Check the station printed on your ticket first: Wuhan, Wuchang and Hankou are three different stations and the three journeys share nothing.
  2. Go down to Tianhe Airport railway station on the basement level of the T3 transport centre — T2 arrivals take the free Konggang Route 3 shuttle first — and enter with your registered ticket.
  3. Ride the Wuhan–Xiaogan intercity train straight through: about 35 minutes to Wuchang from ¥15 in second class, or about 12 minutes to Hankou from ¥7–8. These are the two directions with genuine direct services.
  4. Departures and seats can be checked and booked in the buttons below. There is no service from Tianhe Airport to Wuhan station, so we deliberately offer no button in that direction rather than sending you to an empty results page.

These three are easy to confuse: all are called Wuhan in one form or another but sit on different banks, Wuchang south of the Yangtze, Hankou in the northern district, and Wuhan station to the east on the high-speed main line, so read the name on your ticket carefully.

Late-night and early-morning arrivals

Reaching Wuhan station late is awkward because the two cheapest options have hard time boundaries: the free shuttle stops running at 17:55, with its registration desk closing at 18:30, and the last Line 2 train leaves at 23:00. The real fallback is airport bus Line 2, which costs ¥45, runs roughly every 30 minutes until the last flight, and can be ridden free from 18:15 by passengers who qualify for the air-rail shuttle. After that it is a taxi or a ride-hailing car over about 42 km in 45 to 70 minutes, and Wuhan tariffs contain no night surcharge, so the formula is identical whether you land at noon or at three in the morning.

Questions travellers ask

Is there a direct train from Tianhe Airport station to Wuhan station?

No. Tianhe Airport station is on the intercity line towards Xiaogan and operates no through trains to Wuhan station. Use one of the surface options here instead: the free air-rail shuttle, airport bus Line 2 at ¥45, or Metro Line 2 changing to Line 4 for ¥8.

What is the fastest way from the airport to Wuhan station?

It depends on your budget and the hour. On board time is roughly an hour on three of them — the free shuttle, bus Line 2 and a taxi at 45 to 70 minutes — while the metro needs nearly 100 minutes and does badly at rush hour. Heavy bags or a tight window argue for a cab; a comfortable schedule argues for the free shuttle or the coach.

How do I ride the air-rail shuttle for free?

You need a flight ticket plus a G- or D-series high-speed ticket within the same 48 hours. Register in person with both legs of the itinerary and your ID at the airport bus desk inside door 12 of T3 or door 9 of T2, between 08:30 and 18:30 during the trial, then board at the third bay outside door 12 of Level 1 at T3.

What if I miss the 17:55 shuttle?

Eligible passengers switch to airport bus Line 2 free of charge from 18:15 onwards, and that line keeps running about every 30 minutes until the last flight. Anyone who does not qualify simply buys a ¥45 ticket for the same coach.

How much is the airport bus to Wuhan station and how long does it take?

Line 2 costs ¥45 to Wuhan Railway Station and takes about an hour. It runs from 08:30 until the last flight roughly every 30 minutes, and passengers who qualify for the air-rail shuttle ride it free from 18:15.

How do I reach Wuhan station by metro?

Take Line 2 towards Fozuling 20 stops to Hongshan Square, change inside the station to Line 4 towards Wuhan Railway Station for 11 more stops: 31 stops, about 96 minutes and ¥8. The last city-bound train leaves Tianhe Airport at 23:00, with a 06:30 first train on public holidays.

How much is a taxi to Wuhan station?

No official reference price is published. It is about 42 km charged on the formula — ¥10 flag drop, ¥1.8 or ¥2.0 per km, 50% empty-return surcharge past 10 km — plus the expressway toll, and third-party sites quote ¥110–140 and 45–70 minutes as a reference range rather than an official price.

How much time should I allow to reach Wuhan station?

Add at least three things together: baggage claim and the walk between modes, waiting time — about 30 minutes for the coach, roughly 30 minutes at peak and an hour off-peak on the free shuttle — and about an hour on board. If you use the metro, budget the full 96 minutes.

My train leaves from Wuchang or Hankou — is it the same route?

Completely different, and simpler, because both have direct intercity trains: about 12 minutes to Hankou from ¥7–8 in second class, and about 35 minutes to Wuchang from around ¥15. Check those two legs with the buttons below.

I arrive at T2 and need to catch a train — anything special?

Everything rail-related sits on the T3 side. Take the free Konggang Route 3 shuttle from door 10 of Level 1 at T2, roughly every five minutes from 06:00 to 23:00, or walk the 890 m corridor, then go down to the basement transport centre. Coaches and taxis do have T2 stops, so those two do not require the trip across.
