Airport buses at Chengdu Shuangliu (CTU): no daytime route to the city, just two night lines

Let us start with the answer most people are looking for: there is no daytime airport coach from Shuangliu into the city any more. Both surviving lines run only at night, so by day you take Metro Line 10, a taxi or a ride-hailing car.

In short

Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport currently has no daytime coach into the city at all. The airport’s own airport-express page lists just two services, and both of them run only at night. The first is night express route 1, which links the airport with Chunxi Road for a flat ¥2: from the airport towards Chunxi Road it runs 21:00 to 04:30 and back from Chunxi Road 22:00 to 05:30, roughly every 40 to 70 minutes, calling at Nijiaqiao, Sichuan Gymnasium, Huaxiba, Jinjiang Hotel, Yanshikou and Zongfu Road before terminating at the north end of the Chunxi Road pedestrian street. The second is Tianfu Airport express night line 5, running between Shuangliu and Tianfu International Airport via Global Center for ¥25 between 00:00 and 05:00; it exists purely for airport-to-airport transfers and never goes into town. The old express lines 1, 2 and 3 — towards Renmin South Road, the north railway station and the east railway station, with fares around ¥10 to ¥17 — have been taken down from the official site, and the Chengdu Bus Group timetable republished locally says the same thing: five airport express lines remain, one at Shuangliu and four at Tianfu. Any timetable or fare you find on a travel site for lines 1, 2 and 3 is out of date and is deliberately not reproduced here. Note too that the airport’s long-distance coach station suspended every route on 1 January 2023 for terminal works, so there are no intercity coaches from Shuangliu to other cities either. So what do you take by day? Three things: Metro Line 10 from outside exit 4 on the T1 arrivals level or the L2, L3 and L4 corridors on Level B2 at T2, towards Wuhou Shrine, changing to Line 3 at Taipingyuan for Chunxi Road in about 50 minutes; a taxi via the airport expressway in about 30–45 minutes; or a ride-hailing car from the designated car park signed in the arrivals hall. And if your real destination is Chengdu East or Chengdu South, the intercity train beneath T2 takes 15 minutes for ¥8, faster than any coach could ever be.

The two lines that still run

RouteFareTimeFirst/Last
Night airport express route 1 (Shuangliu Airport to Chunxi Road)Airport to Chunxi Road: T2, T1, Renmin South Flyover South and North, Metro Nijiaqiao, Metro Sichuan Gymnasium, West China Second and Fourth Hospital, Huaxiba, Jinjiang Hotel, Daye Road, Yanshikou, Zongfu Road, north end of Chunxi Road pedestrian street, Chunxi Road. The return journey calls at Metro Tongzilin (Exit B) before T1 and T2. At Chunxi Road you can change to Tianfu Airport express line 1. ¥2 — 21:00 from the airport; 22:00 from Chunxi Road–04:30 from the airport; 05:30 from Chunxi Road
Tianfu Airport express night line 5 (Shuangliu Airport to Tianfu International Airport)Shuangliu International Airport, Global Center, Tianfu International Airport, and the same in reverse. It exists for airport-to-airport transfers only and does not serve the city centre. ¥25 — 00:00–05:00

How to take each option

Where to board and how to buy a ticket

  1. After baggage claim stay on the arrivals level (1F) and follow the airport express signs to the bays.
  2. Know which bay: about 60 m south of Exit 6 at T1, or platform 4 outside Exit 15 at T2.
  3. Buy a ticket in the Chengdu Bus app or its WeChat and Alipay mini-programs, or simply pay the fare on board.
  4. Read the destination board: route 1 goes to Chunxi Road for ¥2 and night line 5 to Tianfu Airport for ¥25, and both board from the same area.
  5. Load your bags into the luggage hold and keep your ticket stub or payment record.

Both services are night-only: turn up at these bays during the day and nothing will come. If you land by day, go straight to Metro Line 10 or the taxi rank.

Night route 1: ¥2 to Chunxi Road

Fare ¥2First 21:00Last 04:30
  1. Get to the bay after 21:00 and find the coach signed for Chunxi Road.
  2. Pay ¥2 on board, or buy in advance in the Chengdu Bus app.
  3. The coach calls at Nijiaqiao, Sichuan Gymnasium, Huaxiba, Jinjiang Hotel, Yanshikou and Zongfu Road, finishing at the north end of the Chunxi Road pedestrian street.
  4. Coaches come roughly every 40 to 70 minutes until 04:30; if you cannot wait, take a taxi.

This is currently the only airport express route from Shuangliu into the city, and at ¥2 the cheapest public transport at the whole airport. The official page gives no total journey time, only the first and last departures and the headway; towards the airport it leaves Chunxi Road from 22:00 to 05:30.

Tianfu Airport night line 5: for airport transfers only

Fare ¥25First 00:00Last 05:00
  1. Use it only when you need to transfer between Shuangliu and Tianfu International Airport between 00:00 and 05:00.
  2. Board about 60 m south of Exit 6 at T1, or at platform 4 outside Exit 15 at T2.
  3. Pay ¥25; the coach runs via Global Center roughly every 60 minutes. It does not serve the city centre, so do not treat it as a way into town.

By day, transfer between the two airports on Metro Line 19 from Terminal 2 East of Shuangliu Airport towards Tianfu Airport North, first train 06:00 and last 23:30 (the last service back from Tianfu Airport North leaves at 23:35).

Three ways into the city by day

  1. Metro Line 10: outside exit 4 on the arrivals level at T1, or the L2, L3 and L4 corridors on Level B2 at T2. Ride towards Wuhou Shrine and change to Line 3 at Taipingyuan for Chunxi Road in about 50 minutes and about ¥5–7.
  2. Taxi: about 50 m south of Exit 6 on the T1 arrivals level, or at the pedestrian crossing on the T2 arrivals level. It runs on the meter and takes about 30–45 minutes via the airport expressway.
  3. Ride-hailing: follow the signs in the arrivals hall to the designated car park, due east of the T1 car park or south-west of the T2 car park.
  4. For Chengdu East or Chengdu South and a high-speed train: the intercity service from the L3 corridor on Level B2 of T2, 15 minutes to Chengdu East and 10 to Chengdu South, second class ¥8.

The airport’s long-distance coach station suspended every route on 1 January 2023, so there are no intercity coaches to other cities from Shuangliu. For nearby cities take a high-speed train from Chengdu East or Chengdu South, or Metro Line 19 across to Tianfu Airport.

Late-night and early-morning arrivals

Night-time is what these two lines exist for. The metro stops early: the last Line 10 train towards the city leaves Terminal 2 at 23:12 and Terminal 1 at 23:15, Line 30 finishes at 23:10 and the last Line 19 towards Jinxing runs at 00:16. Between 23:00 and 04:30, night express route 1 to Chunxi Road — ¥2, every 40 to 70 minutes — is the only public transport still heading into town, and between 00:00 and 05:00 Tianfu Airport night line 5 (¥25) covers transfers between the two airports. Later than that, or if the wait is too long, there is only the taxi rank and ride-hailing, both 24 hours, with the night tariff from 23:00 to 06:00.

Questions travellers ask

Is there still an airport bus from Chengdu Shuangliu?

Not into the city by day. The airport website lists only two night services: night express route 1 to Chunxi Road at ¥2 between 21:00 and 04:30, and Tianfu Airport night line 5 at ¥25 between 00:00 and 05:00, which is for airport-to-airport transfers.

Why do travel sites still list airport bus lines 1, 2 and 3?

It is out of date. The old lines 1, 2 and 3, which ran to Renmin South Road, the north railway station and the east railway station for ¥10 to ¥17, have been removed from the airport website; the Chengdu Bus Group timetable says five airport express lines remain, one at Shuangliu and four at Tianfu. This page only lists what is officially running.

How much do the airport buses cost?

Night route 1 to Chunxi Road is ¥2 and Tianfu Airport night line 5 is ¥25. There are no other lines and no other fares.

Where do the airport buses leave from?

About 60 m south of Exit 6 on the arrivals level of T1, and at platform 4 outside Exit 15 on the arrivals level of T2. Both lines board from the same area.

What time does the last airport bus leave?

Night route 1 runs towards Chunxi Road until 04:30 and back from Chunxi Road until 05:30; Tianfu Airport night line 5 runs 00:00 to 05:00. There is no service in either direction during the day.

I land during the day with no coach — how do I get into town?

Metro Line 10 is the reliable answer: outside exit 4 on the T1 arrivals level or the L2, L3 and L4 corridors on Level B2 at T2, towards Wuhou Shrine, changing to Line 3 at Taipingyuan for Chunxi Road in about 50 minutes. With heavy bags take a taxi or ride-hailing car, about 30–45 minutes via the airport expressway.

Are there coaches from Shuangliu to other cities?

No. The airport coach station suspended every route on 1 January 2023 for terminal works. For nearby cities take a high-speed train from Chengdu East or Chengdu South, or Metro Line 19 across to Tianfu Airport.

Is there a bus to Tianfu International Airport?

Only Tianfu Airport night line 5: ¥25, 00:00 to 05:00, roughly every 60 minutes, via Global Center. By day take Metro Line 19 from Terminal 2 East of Shuangliu Airport towards Tianfu Airport North, first train 06:00 and last 23:30.

How long does night route 1 take?

The official page publishes the first and last departures and the headway (every 40 to 70 minutes) but no total journey time, so this page gives no figure. It calls at many stops — Nijiaqiao, Sichuan Gymnasium, Huaxiba, Jinjiang Hotel, Yanshikou and Zongfu Road — before finishing at the north end of Chunxi Road pedestrian street, so even with clear night-time roads it is usually slower than the metro.

Can I pay for the bus with my phone?

Yes. You can buy in the Chengdu Bus app or its WeChat and Alipay mini-programs, or simply pay the fare on board — ¥2 or ¥25.

Bus, metro or taxi?

By day there is no coach, so it is metro or taxi: alone with light bags and not late at night, Line 10 changing to Line 3 is the best value at about 50 minutes and ¥5–7; with heavy bags, three or four people, or after the metro has stopped, a taxi door to door is easier. Late in the evening after 21:00, if you have time to spare, the ¥2 night route is the cheapest ride at the airport.
