Taxis at Changsha Huanghua Airport (CSX): the meter, pickup points and ride-hailing

The city publishes the tariff formula, not an airport-to-downtown price. So here is the formula in full, with the third-party reference range clearly labelled as such.

In short

Taxis at Changsha Huanghua queue at the rank outside the arrivals-level exit of T1 and T2. You pay by the meter and should ask for a receipt. The published Changsha tariff is: ¥8 for the first 2 km by day, then ¥2 per km; between 22:00 and 05:30 the flag fall is ¥10 for the first 2 km and the rate is ¥2.4 per km; a low-speed time charge of ¥1 is added for each accumulated two minutes; and any expressway tolls are paid by the passenger, which for most city-centre trips means the airport expressway toll on top of the metered fare. No official airport-to-city-centre fare is published. Run the formula across roughly 28 km and you get about ¥60; add the toll and time spent crawling and the real figure lands somewhere in the ¥70–90 bracket. Third-party travel sites give a reference range of around ¥80 and about 50 minutes, and we treat that exactly as what it is — a reference, not an official price. Cash is widely taken alongside Alipay and WeChat QR payment, and a payment-service desk at the T2 arrivals exit helps foreign visitors link their international cards.

How to take each option

How to get a taxi

Fare Metered
  1. After baggage claim, follow the taxi signs out through the arrivals-level exit. Ignore drivers who approach you inside the terminal.
  2. Join the queue at the taxi rank: outside the arrivals-level exit at T1, and on the outer lane of the arrivals exit at T2.
  3. Before getting in, show the driver the Chinese name and address of your destination and say you want the meter.
  4. On arrival pay the metered fare plus the airport expressway toll, and ask for a receipt.

Only board at the official rank and take the next car in the queue. The receipt carries the plate number and the complaints line: 0731-84303488, the Changsha taxi regulator.

How the fare adds up

  1. By day: ¥8 covers the first 2 km, then ¥2 for each further kilometre.
  2. Between 22:00 and 05:30: ¥10 covers the first 2 km, then ¥2.4 per kilometre.
  3. In jams or at red lights, the low-speed charge adds ¥1 for every accumulated two minutes.
  4. Finally, add the airport expressway toll, which the passenger pays separately on top of the metered fare.

Worked example: 28 km by day in light traffic is ¥8 plus 26 km at ¥2, which is ¥60, plus the toll and any low-speed charge — which is why the real figure usually lands around ¥70–90.

Using a ride-hailing app

  1. Before you order in the app, confirm the pickup point: ride-hailing uses a dedicated zone separate from the taxi rank.
  2. Follow the signs to that zone and check the plate and driver details before getting in.

The app shows the price up front, which is more predictable than the queue late at night or on a long run — though at peak times you may still wait for a car.

Late at night

  1. The last maglev is at 22:30 (23:00 on holidays) and Metro Line 6 stops around 23:00, after which only taxis and ride-hailing remain.
  2. From 22:00 to 05:30 the night tariff applies: ¥10 for the first 2 km, then ¥2.4 per km.

If you are short of cash, the Airport Express to Wuyi Square keeps running towards the city until the last flight; ask at the bay. The T2 payment-service desk can help you link an international card.

Late-night and early-morning arrivals

Taxis and ride-hailing run around the clock. From 22:00 to 05:30 the night tariff applies — ¥10 for the first 2 km then ¥2.4 per km, roughly 20% above the day rate. The last maglev leaves at 22:30 (23:00 on holidays) and Metro Line 6 finishes at about 23:00. There is a payment-service desk for foreign visitors at the T2 arrivals exit.

Questions travellers ask

How much is a taxi from Changsha Airport to the city centre?

No official figure exists. On the published tariff — ¥8 for the first 2 km then ¥2 per km — roughly 28 km comes to about ¥60; add the airport expressway toll and any low-speed time charge and you are looking at about ¥70–90. Third-party travel sites quote around ¥80 and about 50 minutes.

What is the Changsha taxi flag drop?

¥8 for the first 2 km by day, then ¥2 per km. Between 22:00 and 05:30 it is ¥10 for the first 2 km, then ¥2.4 per km.

Is there a night surcharge on Changsha taxis?

Yes. From 22:00 to 05:30 the night tariff applies: ¥10 for the first 2 km then ¥2.4 per km, around 20% above the day rates of ¥8 and ¥2 per km.

Does sitting in traffic cost extra?

Yes — the low-speed charge adds ¥1 for every accumulated two minutes, so jams and long red lights do show up on the meter.

Who pays the expressway toll?

The passenger, on top of the metered fare. Most city-centre trips use the airport expressway, so expect one toll.

Where do I find a taxi at the airport?

The rank outside the arrivals-level exit at both T1 and T2 — at T2 it is on the outer lane of the arrivals exit. Follow the signs and queue.

Where does ride-hailing pick up?

There is a dedicated ride-hailing pickup zone, separate from the taxi rank — follow the signs.

Can I pay a Changsha taxi by card or QR code?

There is no official page on payment methods. In practice cash is universally accepted and Alipay or WeChat QR payment is widely supported. For foreign cards, set them up first at the payment-service desk at the T2 arrivals exit.

Should I insist on the meter, and do I tip?

Always insist on the meter and keep the receipt. There is no tipping — just pay the metered total.

Can I still get a taxi at 3 a.m.?

Yes — taxis and ride-hailing run 24 hours, though by 3 a.m. the maglev, metro and coaches have all finished.

What if the driver takes a long route or overcharges?

Take the receipt, which shows the plate number and the complaints line, and call the Changsha taxi regulator on 0731-84303488.
