How to take each option

Boarding at Pudong Airport

First 07:02Last 21:42
  1. From arrivals, follow the Maglev signs to the station on level 2 between Terminals 1 and 2.
  2. Buy at the counter — say "one single"; a same-day boarding pass gets the ¥40 fare.
  3. Put your bags through the X-ray scanner.
  4. Standard class is unreserved — sit anywhere.

Towards the city the first train is 07:02 and the last 21:42; towards the airport from Longyang Road, 06:45 and 21:40.

Changing at Longyang Road

  1. Ride 8 minutes to Longyang Road.
  2. Change to Line 2 (for Lujiazui, People’s Square, East Nanjing Road, Jing’an Temple and Hongqiao), or Lines 7, 16 or 18.

The Maglev does not reach the city centre — it compresses 30 km into 8 minutes, and you change to the metro from there.

Late-night and early-morning arrivals

The last train leaves at 21:42. If you land after 21:00 you will probably miss it — immigration and baggage take 45–60 minutes — so use Metro Line 2, the late-night bus or a taxi.

Questions travellers ask

How much is the Maglev?

¥50 single, or ¥40 with a same-day boarding pass or a Shanghai transport card; ¥80 return, valid seven days; ¥100 VIP single and ¥160 VIP return.

How often does it run?

Every 15–20 minutes, so you rarely wait long.

Does the Maglev go to the city centre?

No. It links only Pudong Airport and Longyang Road; change there to Lines 2, 7, 16 or 18.

Does it really hit 431 km/h?

It currently runs at 300 km/h. The 431 km/h top speed has been suspended since May 2021 and only appears in test runs.

Is the Maglev worth it?

Yes if you are in a hurry or want the experience: 8 minutes versus about 100 on Metro Line 2. But ¥50 only gets you to Longyang Road, and with luggage a taxi door to door may be easier.

Can I book tickets online in advance?

No need. The counter or the machines take a few minutes, and standard class has unreserved seating.

Do children pay?

Children up to 1.3 m tall travel free with a paying adult if they do not take a separate seat.

What time is the last train?

21:42 from the airport towards the city; 21:40 from Longyang Road towards the airport.
