In short
Start with the authority. The Sanya Municipal Development and Reform Commission sets out in its price information table that cruise taxi fares in Sanya are government-set prices under approval document Sanfu [2015] No. 200, in force since 20 October 2015. The terms are these. Flag fall: ¥11 for the first 2.5 km in a Class I car, ¥10 in a Class II car. Distance rate: ¥2.4 per km beyond the flag distance in a Class I car, ¥2.20 in a Class II car, with the meter ticking every 500 m and charging 50% of the per-km rate each time. Return-empty surcharge: for the part of a one-way trip beyond 10 km, an extra 50% of the per-km rate applies per km, which works out at about ¥3.6 per km blended for Class I and ¥3.3 for Class II. Waiting charge: when the taxi waits at your request or is held below 12 km/h by traffic, time is accumulated, the first 5 minutes are free and after that 20% of the per-km rate is charged per minute, ¥0.48 a minute in a Class I car and ¥0.44 in Class II. Night surcharge: between 23:00 inclusive and 06:00 exclusive, 20% is added to the whole fare. The classes are defined as well: Class I means an engine of 1.8 litres or more with a purchase price above ¥100,000 and below ¥150,000, plus accessible vehicles the transport authority certifies as costing over ¥150,000; Class II means 1.6 litres or less with a purchase price under ¥100,000. The rank is in the taxi queue opposite Gates 4 to 5 of the Level 1 arrivals hall at T1 and T2, or outside Gate 01 of the Level 1 arrivals hall at T3, with phone dispatch on 95128, then press 2. Ride-hailing cars use a separate area opposite Gates 2 to 3 of the Level 1 arrivals hall at T1 and T2, entered through the east or west ride-hailing entrance and reached along the zebra crossing, while at T3 you take a shuttle from outside Gate 2 on the east side of Level 1 to the temporary car park; waiting or hailing in no-stopping zones or on the carriageway is prohibited. Pay what the meter shows and take a receipt: licensed taxis carry the fare table and charging rules on both side windows and the driver supervision card on the windscreen. For foreign visitors there are only two official statements. Around 12,700 merchant terminals in Sanya displaying the foreign-card acceptance mark take international cards directly, according to the Sanya Asian Beach Games Financial Payment Service Handbook reported by Hainan Daily and People’s Daily Online, and the Hainan Fangxin Fu app is being piloted in the taxi fleets of Haikou and Sanya so a driver can use an NFC phone as a terminal and you simply tap a foreign card against it. Complaints and enquiries go to 12345, to 12328 at the Sanya Transport Bureau, or to 0898-88667813. As for prices, no official airport-to-city figure exists: third-party travel sites quote roughly ¥25–50 and 20 minutes for Sanya Bay and the city area, ¥40–70 and 35 minutes for Dadonghai, and ¥80–120 and 45 minutes for Yalong Bay, all of them reference ranges rather than official prices.

How to take each option
How to get a taxi
Fare Metered
- After baggage claim follow the taxi signs out of the arrivals hall and ignore anyone who approaches you inside the terminal.
- Join the official queue opposite Gates 4 to 5 of the Level 1 arrivals hall at T1 and T2, or outside Gate 01 of the Level 1 arrivals hall at T3.
- Show the driver the Chinese name and address of where you are going, ask for the meter and check it has started before you settle in.
- Pay what the meter shows, take the receipt and note the plate. Complaints go to 12345, 12328 or 0898-88667813.
Licensed taxis carry the fare table and charging rules on both side windows and the driver supervision card on the windscreen. Queues get long at Spring Festival and National Day, when the authorities suggest leaving the airport by bus or coach and changing later.
How the fare adds up
- Flag fall: ¥11 for 2.5 km in a Class I car, ¥10 in a Class II car, with the class shown on the door or on the supervision card.
- Beyond 2.5 km the distance rate applies, ¥2.4 per km in Class I and ¥2.20 in Class II, with the meter ticking every 500 m at 50% of the per-km rate each time.
- Past 10 km a return-empty surcharge of 50% of the per-km rate applies, giving a blended rate of about ¥3.6 per km in Class I and ¥3.3 in Class II.
- As an illustration and not a quote: take roughly 35 km to Yalong Bay in a Class I car, so ¥11 plus 32.5 km at about ¥3.6 comes to roughly ¥128, near the top of the ¥80–120 third-party range. Only the meter decides.
- Traffic and night add more: below 12 km/h the clock runs, free for the first 5 minutes and then ¥0.48 a minute in Class I or ¥0.44 in Class II, and 20% is added to the whole fare between 23:00 and 06:00.
No official reference fare or official distance is published for the airport to the centre or to Yalong Bay, so the figure here is simply the government formula applied to a third-party distance, and neither is a price.
Paying: cash, QR wallets and foreign cards
- Cash or a QR wallet is the safe default: pay the meter and take a receipt, since Sanya taxis normally accept cash plus Alipay and WeChat Pay even though the airport publishes no payment page.
- With a foreign card, the official statement is that around 12,700 merchant terminals in Sanya carrying the foreign-card acceptance mark take international cards directly, according to the Sanya Asian Beach Games Financial Payment Service Handbook reported by Hainan Daily and People’s Daily Online.
- To tap and pay, the Hainan Fangxin Fu app is being piloted in the taxi fleets of Haikou and Sanya, letting the driver use an NFC phone as a terminal so you hold your foreign card against it. It is a pilot, and coverage of every cab is unconfirmed.
- The broader fallback is to link a VISA or MasterCard credit card to Alipay or WeChat Pay and scan, or to top up UnionPay’s Nihao China app, while the overseas version of the digital RMB app can be topped up straight from a foreign bank card.
The airport has no dedicated payment page, so every foreign-card statement above comes from official reporting rather than the airport itself. Coverage of every cruise taxi is unconfirmed, so carry cash as well.
Ordering a ride-hailing car
- Place your order in the app and pick the dedicated area opposite Gates 2 to 3 of the Level 1 arrivals hall at T1 and T2.
- Enter through the east or west ride-hailing entrance and follow the zebra crossing. At T3 take the shuttle from outside Gate 2 on the east side of Level 1 to the temporary car park and walk from there.
- Check the plate and the last digits of the driver’s phone before getting in, and never wait or hail in no-stopping zones or on the carriageway. Longer and late-night rides are priced dynamically by the platform rather than by the cruise-taxi tariff above.
At Spring Festival and National Day the queues for taxis and ride-hailing cars get long, and the authorities suggest leaving by bus or coach and changing later. Late at night the Sanya Transport Bureau organises ride-hailing cars into a dedicated loop at the airport until the last flight is cleared.
If you would rather not take a cab
- For Sanya station or an onward train, walk to Fenghuang Airport station on the west side of Terminal 1 and ride one stop in as little as 8 minutes for ¥8, an order of magnitude below a cab.
- Staying in Yalong Bay or Haitang Bay with light bags? Take Bus Line 1, 09:00 to 02:00, or Line 2, 10:00 to 22:00, both sectional and capped at ¥25.
- Staying in Sanya Bay or Dadonghai? Line 1 calls at Haiyue Square, the main bus station and Dadonghai, so get off part way.
One thing worth repeating: no tram serves the airport, since Sanya has only the Sanya Railway Station to Jiangang Road line at ¥3 between 06:30 and 22:31, so there is no cheaper tram option and even riding it costs ¥8 to reach Sanya station first.
Questions travellers ask
How much is a taxi from Sanya airport to the city centre?
No official figure exists. Only the government tariff can be checked, document Sanfu [2015] No. 200: ¥11 for the first 2.5 km in a Class I car then ¥2.4 per km, ¥10 and ¥2.20 in a Class II car, plus 50% of the per-km rate for every kilometre past 10 km. Third-party travel sites quote about ¥25–50 and 20 minutes, a reference range rather than an official price.
What does a taxi to Yalong Bay cost?
No official price here either. The distance runs past 10 km, so the return-empty surcharge applies at 50% of the per-km rate, about ¥3.6 blended for a Class I car, which puts a 35 km assumption at roughly ¥128. Third-party sites quote ¥80–120 and about 45 minutes.
Is there a night surcharge?
Yes. Between 23:00 inclusive and 06:00 exclusive, 20% is added to the whole fare. Traffic adds a waiting charge: below 12 km/h the clock runs, free for the first 5 minutes, then ¥0.48 a minute in a Class I car or ¥0.44 in Class II.
What is the difference between a Class I and a Class II taxi?
The government tariff is banded by vehicle. Class I means an engine of 1.8 litres or more with a purchase price above ¥100,000 and below ¥150,000, plus accessible vehicles certified by the transport authority as costing over ¥150,000; Class II means 1.6 litres or less with a purchase price under ¥100,000. The flag fall is ¥11 in Class I and ¥10 in Class II.
Where is the taxi rank at the airport?
The taxi queue sits opposite Gates 4 to 5 of the Level 1 arrivals hall at T1 and T2, or outside Gate 01 of the Level 1 arrivals hall at T3. Ride-hailing uses a separate area opposite Gates 2 to 3 at T1 and T2, while at T3 you take a shuttle from outside Gate 2 on the east side to the temporary car park.
Can I order a Didi at the airport?
Yes, but only from the dedicated area opposite Gates 2 to 3 of the Level 1 arrivals hall at T1 and T2, entered through the east or west entrance and reached along the zebra crossing, or via the shuttle to the temporary car park at T3. Waiting or hailing in no-stopping zones or on the carriageway is prohibited.
Can I pay with a foreign bank card?
Two official statements apply: around 12,700 marked merchant terminals in Sanya take international cards directly, and the Hainan Fangxin Fu app is being piloted in the taxi fleets of Haikou and Sanya so the driver can use an NFC phone as a terminal and you tap your card against it. Coverage of every cab is unconfirmed, so carry cash or link an international card to Alipay or WeChat Pay.
What if the driver takes a long route or overcharges me?
Board only at the official rank, insist on the meter, take the receipt and note the plate. Complain to 12345, to 12328 at the Sanya Transport Bureau or to 0898-88667813. Licensed taxis display the fare table on both side windows and the driver supervision card on the windscreen.
Taxi or the train?
For Sanya station it is the train every time: 8 minutes at ¥8, an order of magnitude below a cab. For a bay or any specific address a cab is the only way, with no official fare published and third-party sites quoting ¥80–120 and 45 minutes for Yalong Bay. With heavy bags, three or four people or a late landing, door to door is simplest.
Is there a tram or metro instead?
No, and that is official. Per the Sanya Transport Bureau the city has one tram demonstration line, Sanya Railway Station to Jiangang Road, ¥3 and 06:30 to 22:31, which does not call at the airport. The airport’s own rail is Fenghuang Airport station, 8 minutes and ¥8 to Sanya station.
