The honest version

What the day is actually like

Monastery in the morning, the Laji Pass at noon and the lake in the afternoon — a 12-hour day that covers both the human and the geographic version of Qinghai.

Good for

  • Travellers who want culture and landscape together
  • Anyone interested in Tibetan Buddhism

Skip it if

Altitude-sensitive travellers: the pass sits above 3,800 m and the day does not slow down for it.

Most people get this wrong

Kumbum has a dress code and no photography inside the halls. Shorts and a camera around the neck get you stopped at the door.

Kumbum MonasterySight

One of the six great Gelug monasteries and Tsongkhapa’s birthplace. Walk it clockwise: the Eight Auspicious Stupas, the Lesser Golden Roof Temple, the Great Assembly Hall, the Great Golden Roof Hall, then the butter-sculpture hall — about two hours. Photography is forbidden inside every hall

10:30

Around 3,800 m, the watershed between the Yellow River valley and the lake basin. A 20-minute stop for the prayer flags and the switchbacks — do not run at this altitude

Getting here by train

High-speed rail

The tour starts and ends in Xining. Most travellers arrive at Xining Railway Station — the pick-up loop is a short taxi or metro ride from the exits, and the tour returns you in time for an evening train. If you are coming from another city, check the direct high-speed trains and their first and last departures.

In and out

Per route

What’s included

  • Vehicle and driver for the full day, fuel, tolls and parking
  • Kumbum Monastery admission (¥70)
  • Kumbum park shuttle (¥30)
  • Qinghai Lake Erlangjian admission (¥90)
  • Driver-guide and one bottle of water each

Not included

  • Lunch and dinner
  • Boats and speedboats on Qinghai Lake
  • A monastery guide, if you want one (about ¥160 per group, arranged on site)
  • Personal expenses and gratuities
Heads-up
  • Photography and filming are forbidden inside every hall at Kumbum, as are phone calls. Turn prayer wheels and circle stupas clockwise, and never step on a threshold.
  • The dress code is enforced: no bare shoulders, no shorts or skirts above the knee, or you will be turned away. Wear long trousers and sleeves, and carry a jacket.
  • Ignore the “free khata scarf” and “blessed dzi bead” approaches at the gate — the scarf is free until you take it, and then it costs money.
  • The route runs between 2,260 m and 3,300 m. Take the first day easy, skip alcohol, and check with a doctor first if you have heart or blood-pressure conditions.
  • July and August bring fierce UV and strong wind at the lake — sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat are not optional. After October the pass can carry snow and ice.

For travellers who want a monastery and a high-altitude lake in the same day. With children or elderly parents, note that the Laji Pass sits close to 3,800 m and the stop is deliberately short.

One of the two things you must see in Xining — the other is the lake. Look for the three arts: butter sculptures, murals and appliqué thangka. A national protected site for good reason.

藏传佛教百年寺庙,非常值得一看,酥油花、壁画、堆绣艺术三绝,又是第一批国保和5A景点,西宁必打卡。

One of the six great monasteries of the Gelug school and the birthplace of Tsongkhapa. The halls climb the hillside, mixing Han and Tibetan roof styles — the name means temple after the stupa.

塔尔寺是藏传佛教格鲁派六大寺院之一,是宗喀巴大师的诞生地,整座寺院依山而建,汉藏建筑风格融为一体,先建塔后有寺。

Take a guide. Without someone explaining the iconography it is beautiful but opaque; with one, the politics and the pilgrimage behind each hall come alive.

塔尔寺是格鲁派中地位非常高的寺庙,青藏之旅从西宁开始,以塔尔寺作为第一个景点,非常建议请一个导游全程讲解。
