Chaka is 300 km from Xining and on a different road from the lake. Doing both in a day only works with an early start and no dawdling.

Getting here by train
High-speed railThe tour starts and ends in Xining. Most travellers arrive at Xining Railway Station — the pick-up loop is a short taxi or metro ride from the exits, and the tour returns you in time for an evening train. If you are coming from another city, check the direct high-speed trains and their first and last departures.

- Two versions of this loop run from Xining: this one is a small group of eight with the Chaka train and shoe covers included; the coach version is cheaper and listed separately.
- The mirror depends on the weather — bright, windless, shallow water. Once the wind picks up the reflection breaks, and no itinerary can control that.
- The route runs between 2,260 m and 3,300 m, with Chaka at 3,059 m. Walk around the shore before heading out onto the flat rather than running straight from the car.
- Salt flats throw back a lot of light: sunglasses and sunscreen are essential. Salt crystals chew through footwear, so wear closed shoes or use the shoe covers provided.
- You are back around 22:00. Do not book a same-day train or flight — missed transport is not compensable.
- July and August are peak season; expect queues at the Erlangjian boardwalk and the Chaka train, and possible changes to stop order.
For reasonably fit travellers who want both the lake and the salt flat photographed in one day. With children under six or elderly parents, weigh the 600 km of driving.

How long is the day?
It runs 06:30 to 22:00 — about 15.5 hours from pick-up to drop-off, including the drive. If you are catching a train or flight the same evening, book it for after 23:30.

Hotels in Chengdong, Chengzhong & Chengxi. Your driver and guide meet you there; the exact spot is confirmed the day before travel.

How far ahead should I book?
Two days. We do not accept same-day or next-day bookings because the car, guide and admission have to be arranged in advance. Cancellation is free up to 7 days before the tour; inside that it steps to 20% (6–3 days) and 60% (2–1 days), and nothing is refunded on the day itself.
