The lake only, without Chaka: about 300 km and back in a day
Roughly 300 km of driving for two hours actually beside the water. The plateau is the point; the car is how you see it.
If you want to walk a lakeshore for a whole afternoon, this will feel like too much road.
Erlangjian is a paid gate into the lake, not the lake itself. The free east-shore viewpoints are arguably better — they are stops on the road, not a destination.

The tour starts and ends in Xining. Most travellers arrive at Xining Railway Station — the pick-up loop is a short taxi or metro ride from the exits, and the tour returns you in time for an evening train. If you are coming from another city, check the direct high-speed trains and their first and last departures.
For travellers who want the lake without a long driving day. With children or older parents this is far easier than the Chaka version.

It runs 07:30 to 18:30 — about 11 hours from pick-up to drop-off, including the drive. If you are catching a train or flight the same evening, book it for after 20:00.

Two days. We do not accept same-day or next-day bookings because the car, guide and admission have to be arranged in advance. Cancellation is free up to 7 days before the tour; inside that it steps to 20% (6–3 days) and 60% (2–1 days), and nothing is refunded on the day itself.
The lake does not disappoint — it is huge and genuinely calming. Be aware of the logistics though: the gate is 13 km from the Erlangjian peninsula and the combined ticket runs close to 200 yuan, so decide in advance what you want to do inside.
青海湖本身的湖景辽阔治愈，景色无可挑剔。景区占地面积很大，大门到核心二郎剑半岛距离足足13公里，套票总价近200元。
Erlangjian, also called Base 151, is the best-equipped stretch of the lake: grassland, a small beach, yaks and horses for photos, and boats. The long spit reaching into the water is what gives the place its name.
青海湖二郎剑景区又被称为151基地，是青海湖核心景点之一。以草原、沙滩、动物为主，因深入湖心的长条形似长剑而得名。
Honest verdict: lovely views, average value. The boat is a one-way ticket, signage is confusing, and the free viewpoints along the road outside are arguably just as good. Come for the lake, not the facilities.
